Skillbox - Content

Hello Everybody,

This post is going to talk about chapter 2 in our Social Media Marketing book, Skillbox- Content.

When trying to find content there are three basic ways to go about. The first one would be Curation. Curation would be you gathering and collecting articles that are relevant to your cause or business. The second is Creation. Creation is exactly what it sounds like, you create your own content. This will generally be of a higher quality because it is unique and created solely for your own target audience. The third is Collaboration. Collaboration consists of you finding other people or businesses that are similar to yours and working together to create content. This can be particularly helpful if you are just starting out or are low on funds.

It is important when trying to work in social media that you build your skill set. Being able to create a website goes hand and hand with social media. You don't have to be a major mastermind coder, custom typing everything into Dreamweaver. Wordpress and Google Sites are both helpful in creating a website. Both of these sites provide free or paid options. You don't have to know coding to create your site. They provide you with templates and easy editing. When creating your website, however keep cell phones in the back of your head. In today's society people turn to their phones to find information, make sure your site is accommodating for that. That means less visuals, and keeping things a dash simpler so that cell phone users can easily navigate. NOTHING is more deterring than a website that you know has the information you want but you can't find. Their frustration will define the interaction between your business and them.

Another idea to keep in mind is learning how to create videos. Just look at Youtube. You don't need to have the skill set as a cinematographer to create a useful video. In this chapter Todd Kelsey actually recommends either using a iPhone or an iPod with video capability, just for you to get started. Youtube itself has it's own, limited but still useful, editing software. So even if you might have the technical capabilities you can focus on creating quality content and worry about building your director of photography skills later.

Until next time,
Caitlin Campbell
